"Jewel of the Seas" cruise

I had always heard that the "Radiance" class of ships from Royal Caribbean were the best of the line so it was an easy decision for me to book this cruise. It was an eight day eastern Caribbean cruise December 2-10, 2006 and Scott and I had a D1 balcony stateroom located right in the middle of the hump with a great view on Deck nine. Everything I had heard was true. It is smaller than the "Voyager" class but has glass everywhere. So we grabbed the regulars and even brought along a new couple and headed for the "Jewel."

Day One-Embarkation
Dec 2, 2006

After the flight experience from Hell, Scott and I somehow managed to arrive in Ft. Lauderdale at 11:00P.M. Not bad for leaving Kansas City at 7:00A.M. It was a non stop flight that ended up on another airline changing flights in of all places Washington D.C. Nice place to fly into at night but not the destination we had in mind.

Day Two-At Sea
Dec 3, 2006

After getting through that first day, a day at Sea is exactly what I needed. It gave me the opportunity to relax and explore some of the remarkable spaces the Radiance class of ships have to offer. I have never seen a wall of glass nine decks high on a ship and the elevator right looking out to sea is breathtaking. After a bit of relaxing on the balcony, it is time to get drssed for our first formal night.

Day Three-San Juan
Dec 4, 2006

Here we are back in San Juan. Our first cruise started and ended here. I'm not sure if I like sailing here or flying here best. Something for me to ponder! Well this time at least it was interesting. We went on what shall forever be known as "The Great Coffee Hunt." We were led by our friend Ron whom from now on will be known as wrong way Ron. Six blocks in the opposite direction for four cheap bags of coffee. GET ME BACK TO THE SHIP!!

Day Four-St. Maarten
Dec 5, 2006

This is one of my favorite ports and we took a tour of the island this time. Thankfully our tour started early in the morning because we were one of the last groups to get out of the terminal. A transportation strike? At the Cruise Terminal? In St. Maarten? ARE YOU KIDDING ME????

Day Five-Antigua
Dec 6, 2006

This was a new port for us and while we were there it was crowded with everyone going down the same street to shop. With two mega ships in port it looked like a movie scene."Attack of the Killer Ships."

Day Six-St. Thomas
Dec 7, 2006

St. Thomas is another return visit for us but we still go into town and shop. There is always something new to buy. Then it is back to the ship to relax at the Solarium pool. That is another one of the great spaces on the Radiance class ships. Each solarium is adult only (enforced) and is tropical themed with retractable glass roof. Every Royal Caribbean ship should have this type of Solarium pool.

Day Seven-At Sea
Dec 8, 2006

The last sea day is always a bit sad for me because I know the cruise is coming to an end. However tonight is formal night and the Gala Buffet at midnight. Where do these people find the time to create these works of art?

Day Eight-Nassau
Dec 9, 2006

We had never been to this port either but were looking forward to it so we could go to the Atlantis Resort and Casino. It did not disappoint. I think you need a cab to get from one tower to another. We did "The Dig" tour and enjoyed looking at the fish. My only complaint was that it was a long walk from the ship to the water transport that took you to Atlantis and again quite a distance from the boat drop off to the actual Resort. Need I say that the process had to be repeated in reverse to get back to the ship. I was worn out.

Day Nine-Ft. Lauderdale
Dec 10, 2006

After Disembarking, everyone headed home except for Scott and I. We decided to extend our vacation one day and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. Very nice hotel and not much money. The next morning it was time to go back to the snow and ice we missed so dearly. NOT!

Artwork
Dec 1, 2006

There is no doubt in my mind that Royal Caribbean has some of the finest artwork on their ships. You actually stop to admire it instead of just walking past it.
